Videalert Traffic Management (VTM)
Videalert Traffic Management (VTM) is a system that analyses CCTV images in real-time and automatically detects changes in traffic situations.
Traffic congestion is often a symptom of a problem, maybe an accident or event, which may need fast remedial action or a change in traffic flow management elsewhere to ease the situation. This is becoming of increasing interest as motorway hard-shoulders are being considered as running lanes during peak periods and hence operator responsiveness has to be improved.
Key Features
- VTM is very easy to setup, with the system learning the scene to be observed within minutes
- All the camera feeds can be drawn to a remote central control room, so that operators can manage many cameras simultaneously, typically allowing more to be done without increasing headcount
- Known traffic hotspots can be monitored and once a congestion threshold is reached, an alert can be raised
- Static vehicles, perhaps the result of a breakdown or accident, can be quickly identified, crucial where there is consideration of using motorway hard shoulders as extra lanes at peak times
- Ability to support a wide range of camera types, such that the system can be retro-fitted to existing camera deployments as well as new ones
- Alerts can be notified to external applications, such that other equipment like traffic lights can be operated from detected alerts. This feature may be of particular interest to avoid the unnecessary changing of traffic lights for pedestrians, when a person is no longer present
- Items dropped on carriageways can also be detected
